A Simple Way to Directly Support Children and Families
SAY works with individuals and groups (such as service clubs and corporations) on “drives” where specific items are collected and delivered to SAY San Diego. We distribute the collected items to the families in our programs. The majority of the recipients are very low-income children and families who directly benefit from this support.
On-going Drives
Bottoms Up Drive
Studies have found that parents spend over $1,500 on diapers and formula for their baby in the first year alone, causing a real strain on low-income household budgets. Items are needed for families with new babies, including disposable diapers, wipes, infant formula, toiletries and other baby supplies. Contact Tori Rigg at tori@saysandiego.org to get involved.

Food & Professional Clothing Drive
SAY San Diego's Family Self Sufficiency (FSS) program in Clairemont collects non-perishable food items and gently used professional attire (such as business suits) to give to the clients in that program. The FSS program helps adults who are living at or below the poverty line to improve their employment and financial situations in order to better themselves and their families. Food items provide relief to new clients getting on their feet, while business attire helps clients to present themselves professionally in order to gain employment. Seasonal Drives
Backpack Drive (June-August)
Help youth start the first day of school on the right foot by purchasing and stuffing backpacks that are distributed to children from low-income families. Backpacks can be “stuffed” with a variety of school supplies, including pens, pencils, paper, folders and calculators. Through the backpack drive, you can help support children’s success in school. Contact development@saysandiego.org to get involved.
Adopt-A-Family (October-December)
The Adopt-a-Family (AAF) drive is a wildly successful holiday program that matches donors with SAY clients to ensure that these families enjoy a happy holiday. Families provide a “wish list” of needed items which donors may choose to purchase. In 2007, donors adopted a record 315 families! More donors are always needed. Through AAF, you can experience the gift of truly brightening up someone else’s life during the holidays. Contact tori@saysandiego.org to get involved.
