SAY San Diego’s Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) Prevention Program is designed to incorporate the concept of community partnerships and evidence-based practices and interventions to prevent and reduce the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs among youth. Collective Coalition

The Collective Coalition is funded by the California Department of Public Health and by the County of San Diego. The Collective supports LGBTQ+ individuals by addressing the unique challenges the community faces. Recognizing the intersectionality of systemic social justice issues, the Collective partners and collaborates with a variety of LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and other organizations to address substance use in the community. The Collective promotes resilience, inclusivity, harm reduction, and tobacco cessation while simultaneously working to create a safer environment for the LGBTQ+ community to thrive.

Central Region Prevention Coalition

The Central Region Prevention Coalition (CRPC) mobilizes youth, residents, and community partners to address the trend of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use among San Diego County adolescents. CRPC provides the necessary training and technical assistance to community members in an effort to reduce the impact of alcohol and drug abuse.

City Heights Clean and Safe Coalition

The City Heights Clean and Safe Coalition is partially funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Price Philanthropies. The Coalition was formed in 2013 in response to the community’s complex challenges. A group of individuals and representatives from different sectors came together to work on increasing safety in City Heights. Over the past 10 years, the coalition has evolved greatly and expanded its focus from neighborhood cleanliness and safety to strategic efforts aimed at preventing youth substance abuse in City Heights.

Promise Neighborhood - Barrio Logan

Through parent academies, community organizing, and education events this Barrio Logan effort mobilizes lasting change in communities through engagement, policy education and advocacy built on culturally relevant approaches that lead to prevention of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) related issues and improve safety.

North City Prevention Coalition

The North City Prevention Coalition mobilizes community members to influence policy which affects the trend of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use among adolescents in San Diego County. By providing technical assistance, facilitating community and parent presentations, and encouraging youth-led projects, NCPC raises keen awareness of this tragic issue. NCPC partners with more than 15 organizations and reaches over 4,000 parents, youth, and community residents through various events and activities.

  • Youth Town Halls
  • Community Assessments and Prevention Awareness campaigns
  • Monitoring on- and off-sale liquor code compliance
  • Monitoring illegal marijuana dispensaries
  • Implementing the Crime Free Multi-Housing Program

Tobacco Policy Research Center

SAY San Diego has partnered with SDSU’s Center for Tobacco and the Environment (CTE) to launch the Policy Research Center. CTE is a team of interdisciplinary scientists, community leaders, and policy strategists working to reduce the persistent environmental damage caused by commercial tobacco products in our communities. The center’s mission is to conduct community-driven tobacco policy research that leads to a cleaner and healthier indoor and outdoor environments by eliminating the toxic legacy of commercial tobacco products. 

Coastal Communities

Funded by the County of San Diego’s Tobacco Control Resource Program, Coastal Communities works with the Unincorporated Area’s residents, stakeholder groups, and the Board of Supervisors to advance a policy making 100% of outdoor public places entirely smoke-free. The project also works in the city of Chula Vista alongside Promotoras, youth, Chula Vista Police Department, and the City Council to strengthen the city’s Tobacco Retail Licensing Program to reduce illegal underage tobacco sales and better protect the community and environment.

Elevate Youth

Elevate Youth is funded by Prop 64. Through collaboration with OG Yoga, Project AWARE, and Playwrights Project, Elevate Youth provides various supportive services to youth ages 12-26 with or at-risk of developing substance use disorders. Elevate Youth’s goal is to increase access to trauma informed, evidence-based, and culturally relevant substance use prevention and intervention services for justice impacted youth and their families. At the same time, the program aims to advocate for greater access to these services and opportunities.

Project Safeguard

Project Safeguard is funded by a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Partnership for Success (SAMHSA) grant. Project Safeguard supports community efforts for a safe, healthy and drug-free Southeastern San Diego. The program works reduce youth alcohol and cannabis use by raising awareness of risk factors associated with youth substance use, reducing youth accessibility of substances, and addressing community norms that promote youth consumption, while centering community involvement in all prevention efforts.

Harm Reduction Program

Y San Diego’s Harm Reduction program is funded by the Harm Reduction Coalition of San Diego and the County of San Diego. The Harm Reduction program aims to provide education and help prevent fentanyl overdose deaths, safely dispose of unused or expired medications, and advocate for Good Samaritan Laws. It also focuses on training individuals on how to use Naloxone/Narcan

Project Safeguard

The San Diego Smoke-Free Project, funded by the California Tobacco Control Program, is focused on working with the community to develop and strengthen relationships with a variety of partners. A diverse group of individuals and organizations advise our staff on project activities and outcomes.

Areas of Focus:

  • Smoke-Free Multi-Unit Housing
    To protect children and residents from secondhand and thirdhand smoke exposure, SDSFP promotes the adoption of a smoking and vaping ban in multi-unit housing.
  • Tobacco Retail Licensing
    SDSFP also works to implement a ban on all flavored tobacco products, from cotton candy to menthol, by educating elected officials on Tobacco Retail Licensing (TRL).
  • Youth Coalition
    SDSFP facilitates a youth coalition for members to learn about tobacco and nicotine, including how the Tobacco Industry uses predatory marketing to target their age group.
