Teens get the knowledge, power, and resources to make a change for their generation.
CAT Plus helps teens develop personal reasons for healthy decision making, resisting peer pressure, and preventing unwanted teen pregnancy, STD’s, and HIV contraction. Empowered and knowledgeable teens move toward attaining life goals such as graduating high school, going to college, and having a career. Youth discuss topics rarely covered in school classes or at home.
Services include:
- Trained facilitators to run informational and skill-based groups at school and community-based sites.
- Accurate and up-to-date information about abstinence, various forms of birth control and STI/HIV.
- Teaching and reinforcing of skills to help with decision-making, giving teenagers the confidence and opportunity to put decisions into practice.
Every year, 800,000 teenage pregnancies are reported in the United States, and 1 in 4 teens contract an STD. Don’t become a statistic!
As part of a Teen Pregnancy Prevention (TPP) collaborative, SAY San Diego provides evidence-based pregnancy prevention curriculum to youth ages 13–18 across San Diego County. Trained facilitators emphasize the importance of abstinence as the only sure way for youth to protect themselves against STDs and pregnancy, and also inform participants on how to protect themselves if they choose to engage in sexual activity.
In 2016:
- Served 400 students in areas of the county with the highest rates of teen pregnancies, many of which are double the national average.
- 87% of program charter school participants successfully completed the group lessons.
