New Funding Partners
SAY San Diego is pleased to have received a $2,000 grant from Target in support of our Dad’s Club program.  Dad’s Club engages fathers to be involved in their children’s education through monthly meetings at San Diego elementary schools where dads and kids participate in educational and recreational activities together.  The money from Target will specifically be used for a new Dad’s Club activity called “Photovoice”.  In this project, dads and kids will take photos of messages of peace and violence in their neighborhoods.  The photos will be put on display and spark conversations about how families can help promote peace in their communities.

SAY also received $5,000 from the Boys and Girls Foundation, which provides financial support to organizations that work with abused or at-risk youth.  The funding from the Foundation will be used to help children in various SAY San Diego programs who are in foster and kinship care (care by a relative guardian).  We appreciate the Foundation’s support as we try to make a positive difference in the lives of these children.

Dia de Luertos (Day of the Dead) Celebrated in City Heights
On Saturday, November 1, a large Dia de Muertos event was held in City Heights.  Organized by SAY San Diego and other partners, over hundreds of neighborhood residents gathered to celebrate the lives of loved ones who had passed away.

In addition to food and entertainment, the event also featured altars in honor of those who have passed away, including shrines dedicated to those impacted by alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and violence.

Military Families Find Fall in San Diego
Although the seasons don’t change quite as drastically in San Diego as in other parts of the country, military parents and kids still had the opportunity to celebrate the season with a trip to a local pumpkin patch.

The field trip was organized by the Healthy Start Military Family Cluster, a collaboration of organizations located in Murphy Canyon that provides services to military families.

SAY San Diego serves as the fiscal agent for the collaboration, whose goal is to help military families connect to the information and support that they need.

SAY San Diego Launches Fall Healthy Eating Program
Thanks to a generous grant from Albertsons, SAY is implementing a healthy eating program called “Get Ready, Get Set, Get Healthy” at select after-school care sites.

Through the program, elementary school children will learn about nutrition, appropriate portions and limiting intake of fast food and soda.  The program concludes with a family night where kids and parents share recipes and make milk mustaches.

Through a partnership with Ralph’s grocery stores, SAY San Diego receives proceeds from purchases at the stores made by SAY San Diego partners and friends.  To join this effort, all you have to do is register your Ralphs club card.  (To obtain a club card, go to a local Ralphs store and ask any employee to assist you.)  For every purchase made, SAY will receive a check for up to 4% of your bill.

To link your Ralphs club card to SAY, log on to the Ralphs' store website.  Click on "Community Contribution", go to "Sign Up" and enter SAY's NPO #82979.  You will need your 13-digit club card number, which is found on the back of your card.

For minimal effort, you can help raise funds for SAY every time you shop!
